Ethiopian Meskel Festival, the finding of the True Cross marks the most important ecclesiastical holy days in Ethiopian Orthodox calendar on September 26th. Meskel Celebrations commemorate the discovery of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified by St. Helena, Mother of Constantine the Great. The festival, which lasts into the evening, begins with a procession of youth and clergy in festive dress, followed by performances from a number of different church choirs, gathered from every corner of the city. Each choir group wears its own unique processional clothing, which is ornately decorated and rich in symbolism, and performs chants and choral pieces, accompanied by dances and coordinated movements.
